Best Fake Tan To Use For My Wedding?

Being born and bred in Scotland, I have quite pale skin naturally but I much prefer to be a nice golden colour, nothing over the top, just a healthy glow. I am a seasoned professional when it comes to fake tan and have tried a lot of brands/products over the years. My first experience of self tan was when I was 14 but due to the absolutely rubbish formulas back then, it didn't exactly turn out to plan and before I knew it, I looked like i'd been Tango-ed!ha ha. Luckily nowadays there are so many different types of self tan to choose from that it's alot easier to fond something that suits your needs. I must admit that I have been having scary nightmares recently about a 'Bride Wars' Anne Hathaway-style fake tan fail....
I currently use two types of self tan, Dove Summer Glow for general use which I normally apply twice a week and if I have a sepcial occasion, then I apply Xen Tan Intense Mousse for a more bronzed look. However, lately I have been wondering what would be best to use for my wedding day as the Dove Summer Glow is too light and if you layer it over a few days then sometimes the colour can build up on your elbows, under your arms or on your knees (even when I exfoliate like mad!). You are sometimes left with uneven colour which definitely don't want! However, the Xen Tan is just that bit too dark for my wedding day and I really want something in between the shades that those two products deliver. What I am really trying to achieve on the day is a nice light golden caramel shade that looks subtle and healthy (the pic below demonstrates my idea of the PERFECT shade):So...I have been looking into self-tanning products from various brands to try and find the best possible product for me. These are the main things I will be looking for in my HG wedding fake tanning product:
  • A natural looking, pale golden, even tan
  • A product that doesn't leave a weird lingering biscuit smell behind
  • Quick Drying
  • Reasonably non-messy application (preferably a light milk or mousse formulation)

I will be testing out different fake tans and gradual tanners over the next couple of months and have listed some products that I have in mind below (feel free to share your thoughts on them if you have already tried them!):

Vichy Capital Soleil Self Tanning Milk

Estee Lauder Bronze Goddess Golden Perfection Self Tanning Milk

Clinique Body Daily Moisturiser Light (Medium)

One that really interests me is the Piz Buin Colour Dial Self Tan because you can tailor the colour to suit you...genius idea but whether it works is another matter...

In the meantime, does anyone have any recommendations? (Please note that, personally, St Tropez, Fake Bake and Xen Tan go too dark on my skin so I won't be using them).

  1. Everyone is raving about the St Moritz? That might be worth a try? Im gonna be trying it as soon as I get paid, lol, so I'll let you know. Im getting married next year so I will keep checking your blog for the results, good luck!!

  2. Have you tried St. Moriz? You mentioned St. Tropez was too dark and I heard St. Moriz was the cheaper version for St Tropez so maybe this wouldn't work for you. However, I am fair skinned with red hair and use the St. Moriz and absolutely LOVE it!

The other one I use in the summer is Sun Love.. It is buildable spray tan so it may be an option?

  3. The Xen Tan Deep Bronze is lighter than the Instant Mousse so I'd recommend that. Smells lush, is creamy milky consistency and doesn't go patchy. It is an ideal colour for my irish skin, whereas the other xen tan products are too deep xx

  4. Ive used the pizbuin one and its very good at not fading in a patchy way so that is a good option a few days before the big day so you have time to fade into a natural color!!
However Id stay in the first 2 sections of the dial as I who love the orange use the middle and above ones!!

  9. I wore fake bake on my wedding day and it rubbed off on my dress eek! So don't use that whatever you do!

Also St Moriz can be patchy and i would imagine it would also rub off on your dress (altho i do use it myself)

I hate St Tropez too - it seems to rub off on everything - but maybe its just me? who knows!

My favourite fake tan which i think may give you the colour you are after is Sunbrushed, ive been using for years now I love it. It never stains my clothes either - i should have used it on my wedding day but i opted for the spray tan. I blogged about it here if your interested

  10. Personally I find St. Moriz and Fake Bake to be of the same sort of colour level as Xen Tan and St Tropez. I reviewed He-Shi tan on my blog last week and I think this is a great tan, just slightly lighter than a st tropez kind of thing and no smell of anything, no biscuit smell etc or any fake cover up smell. I did a white line pic so you can see the colour compared to my whiteyness.

Other than that Lancome's gel one and Clinique made me rather orange and tangoed. Never used the Piz Buin one myself since it's so expensive for drugstore and not really ever tried Vichy I don't think? It doesn't ring a bell. Anyway I hope that was somewhat helpful!xx

  11. Hey girl! Hawaiin Tropic gradual tan may work for you since you cant use the other ones without them going on too dark. This gives a very natural color and I havent experienced any bad fading/patchyness with it. I prefer a lil darker since I have Native American in me I need it. Hawaiin Tropic gives me just that glow I think you are looking for & its cheaper. Its very hard to find (here anyways) though! ♥

  12. You could try the palmer's cocoa butter gradual tanner. It didn't irritate my skin and I have really bad eczema most of the year.
The colour is lovely too, it's not at all orange.
Also, it smells lovely! None of that wet dog smell!

  13. Do we know of a fake tan that won`t rub off on my wedding dress getting married in 2 weeks and am getting pretty desparate now plz help debbie x

  14. @Debbie - I will be using the St Tropez Everyday Mousse which just gives a bit of colour to your skin without going too dark. It shouldn't rub off on your wedding dress because you can apply it the night before the wedding, it's colourless when you apply it so there's no messy tint and you can wash the product off in the morning. Hope this helps!

  15. i honestly cant recommend sunspas spray tans more for weddings. i am a beauty therapist and we see hundreds of brides wanting to be brown but not too brown for their wedding days and they always leave happy when we spray them with sunspas soltion called 'sunsmoothie' its more moisturising than a normal tan and its the lightest i have come across with more of a reddish brown to an orangey bronze. which makes it so natural looking. you can find a close salon on their website www.sunspatanning.co.uk my salon is on there!! ;-) good luck!xxx
