The Royal Wedding, Dupe List, Exercise & Summer Sandals

Apparently around 750 million people around the world tuned into watch the royal wedding this morning and I too sat in anticipation to see what Kate would be wearing.  I was surprised at first to see her choice as I thought she might buck the trend and go with something a bit more modern.  However, keeping in mind that royal brides have to keep their arms covered in Westminster Abbey and the fact that Kate will some day become the future Queen of England, I guess it's no surprise that she kept it elegant and classical.

Her dress was very reminiscent of the one Grace Kelly wore to her own wedding.  It seemed fitting as Grace Kelly was also considered to be a 'commoner' marrying a prince!  Kate's dress was designed by Sarah Burton for Alexander McQueen and was ivory and white satin gazar with French Chantilly lace.  I liked the fact that she did her own makeup too saying that she wanted William to see her as she normally looked in every day life.  I enjoyed watching all the pomp and ceremony and I think you'll agree that she looked stunning.  I also LOVED the ivory Alexander McQueen bridesmaid's dress her sister wore...so simple and gorgeous!

Apart from the happy couple, the guests who stood out to me were Earl Spencer's three daughters; Kitty (20), and twins Eliza and Katya (18) shown in the picture above.  All three of them are stunning and represent an altogether more modern side to the royal family.  They are of course the nieces of the late Princess Diana.  Earl Spencer (Diana's brother) married model, Catherine Victoria Lockwood and this may explain where the three girls got their stunning looks!  They all now live in Cape Town, South Africa following their parent's divorce and I reckon they all looked amazing at the wedding this morning.

Kitty Spencer donned the cover of society bible, Tatler Magazine in April 2009 following her mother's cover appearance 19 years previously.  It really is a sign of the times to see members of royalty posing in magazines and maybe it's a sign that some of them are ready to be more open about their lives and who they are.  I guess it's the age of celebrity but I just hope they remember to keep some things under wraps as there are many pitfalls to becoming a 'celeb'! Kitty is studying politics and psychology at the University of Cape Town and is carrying on the trend of getting with 'commoners' by dating a former lifeguard/former model/surfer, no less!

I only came across this in the last few days and you guys may have known about this for ages BUT just in case you hadn't...

Temptalia have a brilliant section on their website called the Make Up Dupe List where you can type in a particular product and find something similar or almost identical! It evens colour-rates and describes the products by how close they resemble what you're looking for.  Genius! So handy if a product you love has been discountued, is a little too expensive for your budget or you just can't seem to get hold of it anywhere.  They add to the list all the time so keep checking for your favourites.

I had been looking into ways of mixing up my exercise routine and came across these videos on You Tube by Karena and Katrina who are certified personal trainers.  Apparently they are the most viewed fitness gurus online so a lot of you have probably heard of them already.  The girls have opened a fitness studio in Hermosa Beach and launched their own “Tone It Up with Karena & Katrina” workout DVD series. They have also donned the covers and editorials of magazines such as Shape, Triathlete, Women’s Health, Runner’s World, Marie Claire, In Style, Vogue and Fitness.

Their website is also fantastic and offers healthy recipes, printable exercise routines and loads more.  I simply watch one of their videos before I go to the gym and then just copy it when I get there.  It's a great way of trying some new work-outs and making sure your body isn't getting too used to anything.  After all, the key to progress in fitness is variety and not just performing the same exercises/routines every day!  I love their videos because they come across as friendly, knowledgeable and even a little goofy sometimes...which I like!

They always play great music over their workouts which really gets you in the mood to get moving.  My aim is not to get super ripped like they are as that wouldn't suit my body type.  Also, to be quite honest, I like having womanly curves and would miss them should they disappear!  So my plan is to use their workouts to tone myself up for summer.  I just wish I could work out on the beach like they do!  I could go work out on Aberdeen beach but I would have to wear a wooly jumper to do so!

And lastly, I spotted these summer sandals on the Dune website recently and I'm in lurrrrve! I want them! I want them!  They are £65 which I do think is a bit hefty, however my Dune sandals I bought two years ago are still going strong so maybe they could be described as a sound investment?...no?
Would they jangle when I walked and annoy the hell outta me and everyone else? Yes.  Do I still want them? Yes.

Makeup Crush, Nars & Jemma Kidd Makeup School

I couldn't help but swoon at Camilla Belle's makeup look from January 2011.  This is the most beautiful soft smokey eye I have ever seen.  The expertly smudged dark shadows make her look so mysterious and sultry!  It's not the easiest look to pull off and her gorgeous warm skin tone helps to keep the overall look sexy instead of zombie-esque.

I would say the key to this look would be a great under-eye concealer, choosing shades which complement your colouring and blend, blend and blend some more.   This look was created using black eyeliner to create a ring around her entire eye with a grey shadow across her lids and underneath the lashes. The grey tones keep everything soft and hazy. There's a deep rose shade in the crease of her eyelid, which also acts as a soft contour. There's also a creamy, light pink shimmer in the inner corners to keep everything looking fresh.  Absolutely adore this look! P.S. - I also have some serious hair envy now!

I rarely deviate from my favourite bronzer, Dior Matte Sunshine Bronzer in Honey Matte.  This stuff is the best - full stop.  However, when I feel like wearing a bronzer with SLIGHT shimmer, I have found that Nars Irresistiblement bronzer works really well with my skin tone.  I know alot of people love the Laguna and Casino shades but they both just end up looking muddy and too brown on me.  However, this shade, described as 'golden terracotta', blends so well into my skin and just gives me a really natural glow.

The Nars website claims that this bronzing powder "fills in lines and pores for smoother looking skin, sheer color enhances or creates the look of tanned skin, subtle shimmer adds glow, imperceptible finish ideal for all skin tones".  The terracotta shade of this bronzer is very subtle and never looks orange.

You do get a lot of product for your money and I have found that you don't much of the bronzer to create the desired effect.  I would say this would be a good bronzer for anyone with fair to fair/medium skintones.  The rubber packaging does annoy me slightly because it gets mucky very quickly!  But aside from that, this bronzer is great for when you want a bit of extra glow.

I'm becoming a big fan of Jemma Kidd products and this week I started using one of their new blush products JK In Vogue Perfect Blush in 5th Avenue (new for Spring/Summer 2011).  This blush is a gorgeous mixture of light pink, peach and light beige with a nice blend of satin and very, very slight shimmer section.  This blush product also comes in South Beach (bronze hues) and Rodeo Drive (Pink/mauve hues).

I just use my Space NK Blush brush and dab all over the pan to get an even hint of each shade.  I find that it gives me a lovely fresh pop of peachy pink colour and looks very natural on the skin.  The slight shimmer isn't visible unless you look very, VERY closely.  The same way in which Benefit Coralista has slight shimmer in it.  You can sweep it over your cheeks for a natural glow or build it up for more intense colour.  I personally prefer the more natural look.  The powder has good pigmentation as you can see from the individual swatches above and it is silky and smooth to apply.  I'm not as keen on the clear packaging and prefer their usual sleek black floral packaging BUT the product inside gets a big thumbs up from me!

You can get this JK Jemma Kidd blush from ASOS for £12.00.

Now I kept hearing loads about the Jemma Kidd Makeup School Dewy Glow All Over Radiance Creme in Rose Gold.  Since I'm a regular highlighter junkie, I felt it was my duty to check this product out!  It's described as a "light-diffusing crème can be used all-over for a lustrous finish, for use under or over foundation or on bare skin.  Applied to specific areas of the face, Jemma Kidd Dewy Glow All Over Radiance Crème in Rose Gold acts like a highlighter and can be layered to intensify the finish. Added moisturising jojoba and sun filters help protect the skin, while rice bran oil hydrates and enhances the skins elasticity".

This product was also recently voted Best Of Beauty 2011 in it's category by Red Magazine.

I definitely prefer the warmer Rose Gold shade because it compliments my slightly tanned complexion.  I do like the MAC Cream Colour Base BUT they can be slightly too thick and sometimes difficult to work with.  This Jemma Kidd product is the complete opposite in the respect that it has a very lightweight texture that blends into the skin perfectly without disturbing your makeup.  It has the same texture as the Jemma Kidd Blushwear Creme Cheek Colour.  It could be described as a cream-to-powder formula because as soon as it comes into contact with your skin, it just blends seamlessly.  This makes it extremely easy to layer up and create a more intense highlight.

This Jemma Kidd highlighter looks incredibly natural on your skin in the harsh light of day.  I just use my fingers to dab it onto my cheekbones and I find that works perfectly.  It really does create the effect of naturally glowing, dewy skin and I love that it's so undetectable but so effective at the same time.  It's a true contradiction in terms!  The compact it comes in has a mirror in the lid, the usual black rubber-feel Jemma Kidd packaging and it's very compact and convenient.  It does come in a cooler shade Iced Gold  for fairer complexions.  You can get it from LookFantastic for £17.00.

FOTD And Some Products I Have Been Loving Lately

I know I haven't been as active on my blog as usual so apologies for that! I have been involved in an exciting new business venture which is currently taking up a large proportion of my time...all will be revealed in the near future!

I decided to revisit a favourite go-to look a couple of days ago which was originally inspired by Kylie Minogue's makeup in the 'All The Lovers' music video.  I love this eyeshadow combination for a night-time look because the shades really glisten and become so illuminated in darker conditions (if that makes sense).  Sorry the pics are a wee bit hazy, they weren't meant to be like that but my camera decided to act up!

Face: Good Things Miracle Mattifier Moisturiser mixed with No.7 Skin Illuminator (Peach)
Loreal Studio Secrets Resurfacing Smoothing Primer
Estee Lauder Double Wear Foundation (Fresco mixed with Shell Beige)
Origins Quick Hide! Concealer (light/medium)
Benefit Hello Flawless Powder (I'm Cute As A Bunny Honey)
Dior Matte Sunshine Bronzing Powder (Honey Matte)
Sleek Contour Kit (Light)
Benefit Coralista
Dior Shimmer Powder (Amber Diamond)
MAC Fix + (to set makeup)

Eyes: Benefit Brows A Go-Go Palette
Revlon Fantasy Lengths Lashes 'Flirty' (no.503)
Benefit Creaseless Cream Eyeshadow/Liner (RSVP)
Korres Shimmer Eyeshadow in White (all over lid)
MAC Vanilla e/s (on browbone)
MAC Satin Taupe e/s (in crease and outer corners)
MAC Mulch e/s (in outer corners and under outer half of lower lashline)
Ivory e/s from Dior 5 Colour Iridescent Palette (Earth Reflections) just on inner corners
Benefit HighBrow (on waterline)
Estee Lauder Double Wear Liquid Eyeliner (Black) on top lashline
Max Factor False Lash Effect Mascara (Black) on top lashes only

Lips: Estee Lauder Double Wear Lipliner (Pink)
MAC Hue Lipstick
Jemma Kidd Hi-Shine Silk Touch Lipgloss (Petal)

My all time favourite lashes are the Ardell 109 or 110 ones because they are just so easy to apply and pretty much fuss free but I do ALWAYS use Revlon lash glue because it's the most reliable for me.  I personally much prefer false lashes that look as natural as possible and just add that extra bit of volume and fullness.  I'm not into drag queen-esque ones with diamantes, feathers and lace hanging off them!  I have tried some of the Revlon Fantasy Lengths lashes before and was impressed with them as a more affordable option (they are only £4.65 each in Boots).  My faves are the 'Flirty' style as they make your lashes look fluttery without looking fake.  The band on them is very thin and although it comes out of the packaging quite straight in shape, it can easily be manipulated to fit your eye shape.

I love any product that can add super shine to my hair but many shine sprays can leave your hair a bit heavy or even greasy.  I recently started using the Tigi Catwalk Volume Collection Your Highness Weightless Shine Spray...yeah it's a mouthful isn't it!  It claims "the finishing touch for any voluminous style is healthy shine. This practically weightless spray eliminates frizz while adding luminous shine".  Firstly, this stuff smells amazing...I think it reminds me a bit of Armani Code perfume.  It basically smells gorgeous and I'm up for anything that makes my hair smell amazing whilst adding shine.  The spray also has heat protectant qualities so you can use it before you blowdry or after.  It really is weightless and leaves no oily/greasy residue on your hair...

My hair was left feeling fresh, light and really natural.  It left my hair with illuminating shine and the fragrance lasted all night.  It helped to smooth down flyaway hairs too leaving my hair looking really healthy.  Because I have fine hair, I have to be extra careful which products I use so as not to weigh my barnet down but this stuff is now my new favourite shine spray!

I also like the fact that it has a fine spray nozzle so only the slightest mist comes out to delicately coat your hair with shine.  The black, purple and silver packaging is also really pretty!

You can get the 200ml can from FeelUnique here for only £10.35 with free delivery!

Another product that has completely turned my opinion has been Clinique Bottom Lash Mascara which I first heard of on The Yummy Mummy's Beauty Blog and also Tanya Burr's YT channel.  Now I have never worn mascara on my bottom lash line because:

a) I have deep set eyes so I'm prone to dark circles
b) I have never been able to find a mascara that doesn't smudge or flake on lower lashes
c) Normal mascara wands always made it incredibly difficult to apply it without making a mess

It's like you need a completely different formula of mascara to work on your lower lashes and until now, I avoided applying it there altogether.  Because of the drier formula and teeny brush wand of this specially designed Clinique mascara, you can have lightly defined lower lashes without the mess!

I don't like to have heavy mascara on my bottom lashes but sometimes it's nice to define them for night-time looks.  The last thing I want is clumpy, thick lower lashes which would just accentuate my dark circles! So this mascara is perfect for me and the small brush makes the job SO much easier.  I was just left with a clean, smudge free lower lashline with no splodges on my skin.

I don't know why it has taken this long for a brand to catch on to this idea.  By lightly coating my lower lashes, my eyes actually appear bigger and that's the look I was going for.  You can also get this mascara in Brown for a more subtle daytime look.  I love this Clinique mascara and I love the fact that it has enabled me to try something out that I would otherwise have avoided.  Thumbs up!

I just had to include this funny pic of little Wolfey.  I gave him a little noodle and he somehow got it stuck on his head! Tt took him forever to firstly realise he had a noodle on his head and then even longer to get it off!  You can actually see the frustration on his face! ha ha.  Damn you noodle!

I was watching Later With Jools Holland as usual last night and I was amazed by this British guy's performance.  He definitely falls into the category of unexpected.  I mean he looks like an indie Prince Harry but he sings like a soulful angel!  It just shows you can never judge a book by it's cover! What's even more impressive is that he is only 20 years old and he performed this song using only his own voice recorded and played back on the spot to create harmonies and beats.  Impressive stuff!

I'm Back!

Get ready for a bumper post...

Firstly I better apologise for my long absence from the blogging world...I have just been so busy hopping around the place that I haven't been able to even check my emails.  Myself and the hubby were on a jaunt back to Ireland to catch up with family.

Before we went, something amazing happened...Chris came shopping with me! Now, this never EVER happens so I felt rather privileged on that momentous day!  He had a few things he wanted to get and wanted my opinion you see, so in return he felt obligated to trundle into some of my usual shopping haunts.

I managed to find what I was looking for in Zara.  This shop is fast becoming my favourite on the high street, with Reiss being a close second.  I really wanted to get a great pair of skinny jeans with a bit of stretch in them to stop that oh-so-attractive saggy knee look.  I found the perfect pair in Zara for only £25.99! I know where I'll be going for my jeans from now on!  I already have my eye on a black pair and also a really dark denim pair.

I have also been looking for a flowy cream or white blouse for Spring/Summer to wear with shorts, jeans and skirts.  This one in Zara really stood out for me because it has the perfect mix of being smart but casual, lightweight fabric and lovely pocket and sleeve details.  It looks particularly good with skinny jeans, high heels and a blazer.

I did partake in some more shopping whilst in Ireland and a trip to Dunnes Stores resulted in a couple of amazing fashion finds.  I found these skinny utility/combat style jeans with pocket detail for only 7 Euros in the sale! I didn't have high hopes for them when I slung them over my arm on the way to the fitting room, but low and behold, they ended up being the best bargain I've come across all year.  They fit to perfection, they don't lose their shape after a couple of wears and they would definitely rival the more expensive versions on the high street.  I got the exact same pair in a khaki shade.  Well, they were so cheap, it would have been plain rude to only buy one pair!

A Wear turned out to be a little disappointing and I didn't find that many things there that appealed to me.  You often find that all high street stores fall in and out of your favour but I guess it's lucky in a way because I wasn't up for spending a fortune.  I just got this lovely cream, beaded top in the sale.  I thought it would look great to dress up jeans or even shorts in the summer.  It was only 20 Euros and feels 'expensive' heavy if that makes any sense?!

I always like to have a look in a small boutique store called Fran & Jane when I'm in Cork.  They always have unique dresses and accessories and because they only stock a certain amount of each item, it reduces the chances of anyone you know having the same thing.  For all Fran & Jane boutique locations, click here.  Their website also has an online store where some of their stock is available to purchase.

I found this amazing black leather clutch covered in studs for 69 Euros.  Although a little more pricey, leather is always worth investing in.  I also like that the bag is a medium size so it's roomy whilst still being a convenient size to hold.  It also has a detachable silver chain hidden inside if you want to make it into a shoulder bag.  I'm obsessed with anything that's studded so this is now my new favourite bag!

Over time, I have definitely developed a love for Jemma Kidd Make Up School products.  I love their Iridescent Eye Silk Crayon in Tigers Eye, their Hi-Shine Silk Touch lipgloss in Petal and their Skin Rescue Bio-Complex Veil.

When it comes to chucking makeup in my travel bag, I'm a big believer in trying to use multi-purpose compacts that take up less room but still contain lots of products that are useable.  That's why this Essentials palette from Jemma Kidd Makeup School is perfect for anyone who travels alot or simply to take on holiday for a no-fuss look.

Here's the blurb:
"The ultimate palette with a mix of products and shades for any look: day to night, week to weekend and across the seasons.  Ultra werable and versatile neutral, taupe, chocolate brown and charcoal shadows teamed with a fresh flush of colour for the lips and cheeks.  This kit features a complementary mix of matte and pearl highlight, mid and define shadows, wet/dry shadow liner, lightweight lip & cheek flush and non-sticky lipgloss".

Often you get palettes where only some of the shades are wearable for both day and night but every single eyeshadow in this palette is not only wearable, but would suit many different skintones.  The Pomegranate cheek flush shade is just gorgeous and so pretty for a spring/summer dewy look to the skin.  It's very lightweight and blends easily with no greasy or oily finish.  The peachy pink shade really breathes life into your skin!  It also look so pretty as a lip shade.  I was a bit scared by the Tea Rose Lipgloss shade but as you will see in the swatches below, it goes on quite sheer and just adds the right amount of colour to look polished but natural...

I have numbered all the products in the palette just in case you are interested in buying them separately:
1) Pomegranate Cheek & Lip Flush
2) Tea Rose Hi-Shine Silk Touch Lipgloss
3) Grey Eye Wardrobe Eyeshadow Quartet (White)
4) Eye Essentials Shimmer Shadow (Mocha)
5) Brown Eye Wardrobe Eyeshadow Quartet (Taupe)
6) Green Eye Wardrobe Eyeshadow Quartet (Cream)
7) Brown Eye Wardrobe Quartet (Dark Brown)
8) Exclusive Wet/Dry Shadow Liner (Charcoal)

The shimmer AND matte eyeshadows have great pigmentation and to be honest it's unusual to find matte shadows that apply and blend so well.  Generally they can be a pain to work with but these make things so easy.  I love that you get both a matte and shimmer highlight for the browbone as a lot of people prefer to keep things matte in their daytime makeup.

You even get a small guide with the palette for anyone just starting out with makeup.  I think a lot of makeup brands assume that their customers are all well-weathered makeup fans but everyone has to start somewhere and this little guide could prove very handy for someone who has little or no makeup application experience.

I generally become slightly obsessed with peach and coral blush shades in the summer because for my skintone, it's the most flattering hue when I begin to get a tan (albeit mostly fake!).  Many of the peach and coral blushes I have contain shimmer which is generally fine but because I like to use my Dior highlighting powder, a shimmery blush can cause a little too much reflection on the cheeks.   This is where Nars Gilda blush comes in...

Nars Gilda is a matte, sheer coral shade that is lightweight and blends into my skin seamlessly.  More often than not, matte blush can sit on top of your makeup and look powdery or heavy, but this shade just adds a gorgeous flush of summery colour without being overbearing.  I hate blush that makes me look too flushed or like a russian doll.  I have a few other Nars blushes including Deep Throat, Orgasm, Madly and Nico.  I used to favour Deep Throat out of all of those but now I actually prefer Gilda for the perfect daytime, natural flush of healthy colour.  These blush product are not cheap at £20.50 a pop but they really do last for a very long time.

Nars eyeshadows have never had the best track record for me to be honest.  I always have to get them online because unfortunately we don't have a Nars counter here in Aberdeen.  Therefore, you are always buying blind and have to rely on reviews.  Quite a few of the shades I have owned have been gritty, hard to blend and the pigmentation has been disappointing.

When I saw the Silent Night eyeshadow (metallic with gold particles)...I thought "hubba, hubba! come to mama!".  BUT, once again I have been disappointed by the poor pigmentation and uneven texture.  You can see from my swatch above that the colour is very sheer and didn't live up to my expecatation of an intense yellow gold hue with immense reflective properties.  Oh well...you win some and you lose some!

There have been a couple of hair products that I thought were worth a mention since they have made a big difference to my hair or every day hair care routine.  First up is the Pantene Colour Protect Instant Nourishing Shine Spray.  I picked this up after reading Marie Claire in which they voted it a top drugstore product.  I'm always up for anything that will nourish my locks and impart shine.  I just spray this product all over my hair whilst damp and then blowdry.  It makes my hair silky soft, smooth and super shiny without weighing it down or making it flyaway/static.  I also love the scent that lingers in my hair all day!  It just makes my hair look and feel much more healthy and it's mega affordable and easy to get hold of.

I bought the John Frieda Go Blonder Controlled Lightening Spray because I won't be able to go to the hairdresser until after next week and I wanted something that would blend my roots.  I had seen a vid TiffanyD Makeup on YouTube recommending it for blondes who want to lighten and hide their roots.  This sounded AMAZING to me so I had to check it out for myself.

"Versatile, patent-pending formula with citrus and chamomile works with styling heat to gradually lighten and brighten for a natural-looking, blonder blonde. Contains thermo-protectant. Patent-pending technology combines fixative and conditioning polymers that retain hydrogen peroxide, allowing for control of lightening. Visibly lightens in 3-5 uses".

You can either use this product to lighten all of your hair OR just your roots.  I just section off my hair whilst damp, spray it carefully on the roots and then blowdry to activate the ingredients.  Within about 4 uses, my roots were so much less noticeable and blended into the rest of my hair.  I will keep using it every second day to further lighten my roots and keep them looking good until i can get to my hairdresser.  I think this is an amazing product and it's so nice to have finally found a product that gently lightens my hair without causing any damage or adverse reactions.  Because this product contains hydrogen peroxide though, you have to be careful you don't spray it onto your clothes or other fabrics (say furniture) because it will lighten it too!  Alo, it's important to wash your hands after using it otherwise, you may lighten the skin on your hands over time.  It's basically a product that has to be used sensibly and with care.  The instructions stipulate that it is not intended for use on hair that is medium brown or darker.  As long as you are comfortable with that, then you can drive on and enjoy a root-free life!

And the biggest musical shock of last week? Charlie Simpson (formerly of the guitar boy-band Busted) has launched a solo career with a song that I actually blimmin like! Who woulda thought it!?

It's a big departure from his Busted days (or even Fightstar days) but I'm liking his new chilled-out style.  What do you think?

A Small Break

Hi everyone!
Just a quick post to let you know that I won't be posting anything for the next 7 days because I want to spend all my time with Chris now he's back from offshore.  We want to make the most of the nice weather!  We will also be going over to Ireland for a short break so I will update you guys on all that stuff on my return.  Until then, I hope you have a lovely week!

Makeup Crush: Adriana Lima

I saw some pics of Adriana Lima in Brazilian Vogue recently and they specifically caught my eye because I love the back to basics makeup.  Pale skin, a basic yellow gold eye, exaggerated lashes and soft pink lips...

In these pics, it looks like they have added a purple or blue to the lower lashline to create a bit more definition...

It's great to see Adriana rocking pale skin as I'm so used to seeing her uber bronzed.  But then again, she's so beautiful, she could carry just about anything off with ease!
