No doubt you will have seen me twittering away about this house for a while now and on Friday. I am
happy ecstatic to announce that we got it!!! There was a lot of negotiation and too-ing and fro-ing but it's now our house and I can't quite believe it. It really is a dream house for us set on the riverbanks of a beautiful river, surrounded by wildlife and serenity. When we viewed the house, we were looking across the river and saw an otter coming out of the water with a salmon in his mouth! Not your bog-standard back garden! ha ha. Our move in date is 23rd March so that's 5 weeks and 4 days...not that I'm counting. Ha ha.
The house itself is a converted water mill and was built in 1850 so it has a lot of character and history to it. It needs quite a lot of cosmetic work done to it but we can't wait to get our teeth into the challenge! I love that all the rooms are different sizes and shapes...it all adds to the charm of the house! We also have an impressive amount of land with the OldMill, complete with apple trees, a greenhouse and various bridges dotted around the place.

I have already gone on decor planning overdrive and have been collecting images of rooms/items I like. I really want to paint the stairs white and have a stripey runner carpet with stair rods. We will have to replace the kitchen and I really love the crisp white shaker style cabinets with rich walnut worktops. The fireplace pictured above is pretty much what I want for our Sitting Room. I can't wait to buy older furniture and restore it for the house. I have been collecting lots of pics of things I would like for my new house...
We have already bought a few pieces of furniture for the house and I have to say that Gumtree has been a god-send for us! As we are moving from a city centre flat/apartment, we can't afford to deck the whole house out in brand spanking new furniture so a second-hand website is fantastic. There are some incredible bargains to be had on there and a lot of the stuff is almost brand new. Our sofas were pristine and only being sold because the seller couldn't fit them into her lounge!
We have also been playing with ideas for the back garden which currently looks like this...
Our back garden is pretty much RIGHT on the river...good right!? The balcony leads from our sittingroom and I have already imagined myself standing out there sipping a glass of wine contemplating on a nice summer evening!
There's a lot of land to play with!
This is a lade where the water would have run through to the water wheel on the side of the mill. Unfortunately the wheel has been removed but we are already talking about putting it back on again as a lovely feature on the house.
We plan on cutting back those bushes to maximise the garden space and then build a white picket fence around the whole area just to make it a bit more safe for pets and children.
We have been looking up some decking ideas and I think we are going to build a small bridge over the lade, leading to a decking area down by the riverbank. I love these ideas...
So, there are an IMMENSE amount of things to think about and do but we are loving every second of it. We look at this house as our forever home and the place where we want to have/raise children.
We have chatted a lot about getting a puppy but after seeing some ads for dogs in need, we have decided to get a rescue dog first and then get a puppy later in the year. There are so many dogs that are waiting to be re-homed and we think we could offer one of them a fantastic home and environment. Some of the stories really do bring you to tears so we really want to do our bit for one of them.
Stay tuned for updates on that!!!
