Our New House!!!!

No doubt you will have seen me twittering away about this house for a while now and on Friday.  I am happy ecstatic to announce that we got it!!! There was a lot of negotiation and too-ing and fro-ing but it's now our house and I can't quite believe it.  It really is a dream house for us set on the riverbanks of a beautiful river, surrounded by wildlife and serenity.  When we viewed the house, we were looking across the river and saw an otter coming out of the water with a salmon in his mouth! Not your bog-standard back garden! ha ha. Our move in date is 23rd March so that's 5 weeks and 4 days...not that I'm counting. Ha ha.

The house itself is a converted water mill and was built in 1850 so it has a lot of character and history to it.  It needs quite a lot of cosmetic work done to it but we can't wait to get our teeth into the challenge! I love that all the rooms are different sizes and shapes...it all adds to the charm of the house!  We also have an impressive amount of land with the OldMill, complete with apple trees, a greenhouse and various bridges dotted around the place.

Pictured above, starting from the left upper pic and moving clockwise: Sitting Room, Master Bedroom, Family Room, Family Bathroom.

I have already gone on decor planning overdrive and have been collecting images of rooms/items I like.  I really want to paint the stairs white and have a stripey runner carpet with stair rods.  We will have to replace the kitchen and I really love the crisp white shaker style cabinets with rich walnut worktops.  The fireplace pictured above is pretty much what I want for our Sitting Room.  I can't wait to buy older furniture and restore it for the house.  I have been collecting lots of pics of things I would like for my new house...

We have already bought a few pieces of furniture for the house and I have to say that Gumtree has been a god-send for us! As we are moving from a city centre flat/apartment, we can't afford to deck the whole house out in brand spanking new furniture so a second-hand website is fantastic.  There are some incredible bargains to be had on there and a lot of the stuff is almost brand new.  Our sofas were pristine and only being sold because the seller couldn't fit them into her lounge!

We have also been playing with ideas for the back garden which currently looks like this...

Our back garden is pretty much RIGHT on the river...good right!? The balcony leads from our sittingroom and I have already imagined myself standing out there sipping a glass of wine contemplating on a nice summer evening!

There's a lot of land to play with!

This is a lade where the water would have run through to the water wheel on the side of the mill.  Unfortunately the wheel has been removed but we are already talking about putting it back on again as a lovely feature on the house.

We plan on cutting back those bushes to maximise the garden space and then build a white picket fence around the whole area just to make it a bit more safe for pets and children.

We have been looking up some decking ideas and I think we are going to build a small bridge over the lade, leading to a decking area down by the riverbank.  I love these ideas...

So, there are an IMMENSE amount of things to think about and do but we are loving every second of it.  We look at this house as our forever home and the place where we want to have/raise children.

We have chatted a lot about getting a puppy but after seeing some ads for dogs in need, we have decided to get a rescue dog first and then get a puppy later in the year.  There are so many dogs that are waiting to be re-homed and we think we could offer one of them a fantastic home and environment.  Some of the stories really do bring you to tears so we really want to do our bit for one of them.

Stay tuned for updates on that!!!

  3. Oh wow. This house in gorgeous. Good job there is a little bank or I would be worried about flooding! I think you should get a couple of chicken and ducks! And possibly a hot tub in time? Such a gorgeous house with so much potential! I love old buildings with all their quirkiness and personality- and a huge fan of original features. I have it when people knock down old buildings or rip out original features, then building soullesse boxes on top! So happy for you and Chris! xxxx

    1. The lade actually stops the property from being flooded but we plan on doing a couple more things to prevent any flooding in the future. Chris actually mentioned getting chickens! But he also mentioned a micro pig, a donkey, cats...lol. We are both animal crazy so we'll end up with a few animals I think! The building has so many quirky things about it inside and outside...we just loved it from the first time we saw it.

  4. Yey, you got it!!

It's beautiful, I really love the setting. Although I'd be a bit paranoid whenever it rained that it would flood. Guessing it's a bit high for that though! It'll be gorgeous in the summertime. I'd like to come for a BBQ if you don't mind?!! Haha!

  9. Congrats Laura! So happy for you guys, what a beautiful home and you can tell how thrilled/in love, with it you are. You're so right regarding Gumtree being the way forward when having to furnish a whole home, PLUS it's lovely when items have a story before you owned them. I'm sure it'll feel like home, as soon as you start adding your own little knick-knacks to it... such a great place for a Baby Liparazzi too one day. CONGRATS x

    1. Baby Liparazzi! ha ha. Love it! lol. Let's see if I can look after a dog first before we try for kids! ha ha. Gumtree is just brilliant...we have found two sofas, armchairs, tables, rugs etc. And they have all been in pristine condition too. People can be way too snobby about second hand furniture. As you say, it's nice when it has a history all of it's own!

  24. There seems to be a lot of history in your new home! Looking at the pictures, it seems like a pretty big house ala mansion style. You've certainly got a lot of greens surrounding your house, but a concern is the river. You don't want to see that rising up and causing a flood.

  32. I'm glad you've achieved your dream house. I bet Chris is so happy for you. How are you two doing now? Sooner or later, that garden might turn into something like Castle Kennedy Gardens, haha. Where will you guys place the animals? I suggest it should be near the garden - that would be fantastic.

  33. Your new house is perfect! The lot is so big and wide - you can definitely make a lovely garden out of it. And inside the house itself, it looks very warm and inviting. It’s truly ideal for bringing up a family. With a house that beautiful, you cannot ask for more.

  34. You have such a lovely home! I like living in a vast land with a river beside the house as well. I could watch my husband teaching my kids to fish or just play by the riverside. You have a great idea for the deck! I would say you should go for it, if you feel inspired then do it, it is your home and you can do what you want with it, that is if you decide to do it.

  35. Och, your new house is absolutely beautiful! It’s as stunning as all the nature surrounding it. It’s definitely got a lot of character, especially since it was built 160 years ago and right by a river. I think adding a deck would be a great idea, as it would allow you to safely enjoy the river. Have you in fact had a deck built already?
