My Christmas

I just wanted to post a selection of pictures to share my Christmas with all of my lovely readers.

Bucksfizz on Christmas morning before the present opening commenced.

My brother's girlfriend, Vicky, made us this fantastic Ferrero Rocher tree!

Decky was keeping the kittens in line.

The chocolate tin - regularly replenished and even more regularly emptied!

Séamus overseeing the present opening

Me and my wonderful mother-in-law enjoying some Bucksfizz.

The table was almost ready for the ton of food we made! I got these gorgeous hand-made place name cards on Ebay.

Me and my brother's girlfriend, Vicky. This was my version of a Christmas jumper!

Our neighbour hosted an amazing fireworks display which we managed to enjoy from our front door.

Our first Christmas family portrait in the new house.

Decky was just having a wee chat to me in this one - he wasn't in the mood for posing!

My gorgeous boy - Decky.

Boxing Day - Me, my mum and Maddie headed into town for a girly lunch and A LOT of shopping in the sales.

I hope you all had a wonderful Christmas and got spoilt rotten.  I might be a little bit quiet over the next few days as I have more visitors and then preparations for New Year's Eve.

But don't worry, I will be back soon and I have LOADS of stuff to share with you!

I am still waiting for some of the winners of my Christmas give-away to get in touch with their address details so if you were one of the lucky few, please send across your details as soon as possible.

Shiny Vamp Heels & Skin Brighteners

The perfect gift for me is generally a gift voucher. Some people feel it's a gift devoid of any imagination but given how fussy I can be about clothing and shoes, it's the perfect answer to snapping up something that you've had your eye on for a while.  Normally I have no justification to buy yet another pair of gorgeous shoes, however, a gift vouchers allows me to indulge in something as a treat.  My big brother and his girlfriend gave me both a gift voucher and a gift for my 30th birthday so invariably I had the best of both worlds.

I knew exactly what I wanted to spend my Zara gift voucher on...

I have been lusting after 90% of the gorgeous shoes in my local Zara store for a few weeks now.  I knew I wanted a new pair of shoes to wear for the first Aberdeen blogger meet on Friday night.  Although these lovely shoes are heavily embellished on the peep toe, they have a timeless quality that really appealed to me.

I love the delicate ankle strap, stiletto heel and retro peep-toe style that is both comfortable and pretty.  The embellishment matches the high quality of what I have come to expect from Zara.  These shoes are just on the upper scale of what it comfortable with regards to heel height.  Stiletto heels are notoriously awkward to walk in and have a tendency to slip on wooden/tile surfaces so I guess I better watch out for that!

I plan on wearing them with a lovely black dress I picked up in TK Maxx yesterday.  It's a shop I have never really looked in before but after a quick shuffle through the dress rail, I found a really pretty figure-flattering dress for only £29.99.

Now onto a product which I had shelved as a summer-only affair.  This is the third tube of Estee Lauder DayWear Sheer Tint Release that I have bought and there's a very good reason behind my reoccurring obsession.

First of all, EL DayWear on it's own is a fantastic day time moisturiser that is packed full of goodness for your skin.  It smells really fresh and keeps my skin hydrated.  However when you add in the aspect of a sheer tint, it just boosts this product into the hall of fame in terms of complexion pick-me-ups.  The moisturiser in the tube initially appears as a pale green/greyish formulation:

On closer inspection you can see that there are tiny grains within the moisturiser which are actually spheres of  sheer tint.

Once this moisturiser has been blended into your face, it adds just a touch of colour to your complexion that has this amazing brightening effect.  My skin comes back to life when I use this moisturiser and that has come in particularly handy after rather big nights out on the town! This is THE perfect moisturiser to make yourself look human whilst suffering the depths of a hangover!  It gives my skin just the right amount of colour it needs to look healthy, radiant and fresh.  So it's not just a summer product after all!

Another wonderful skin saviour I have been using of late is Neals Yard Wild Rose Beauty Elixir which contains Wild Rosehip Oil, Hyaluronic Acid, Vitamin C and Tumeric.

"Luxurious Wild Rose Beauty Elixir is enriched with wild rosehip oil, one of nature’s richest sources of antioxidant vitamin C, proven to help repair, firm and smooth the skin, ultra-moisturising hyaluronic acid, brightening turmeric, an anti-ageing peptide and the pure essential oils of frankincense and geranium. Use morning and evening after cleansing for radiantly glowing skin".

I have been applying it every night before my moisturiser to help shift some stubborn patches of dry skin around my nose and chin area.  Because it's oil-based I stick to night-time application as I don't think it would be suitable to wear under foundation. It is almost gel-like in consistency and sinks into skin quickly considering it's oil-based formula.

After a couple of night's I noticed a vast improvement in the texture of the dry patches and by the third night they had completely gone! It definitely had a brightening effect on my complexion and it's a brilliant treatment to guard your skin from the harsh elements of winter weather.  It left my skin feeling so smooth and silky.  I will definitely be keeping this on hand for when my skin starts to show the signs of wear after a night out. There seems to be a theme developing here...well...it is Christmas time after all!

My 30th Birthday

I just wanted to do a quick post about my 30th birthday.  I survived it unscathed and had a lovely day shopping with hubby and then at my parent's house having a lovely meal. I won't post about all my presents but rather give you a look at some of the things my nearest and dearest gave me.

I am over the moon with my present from Chris and since I am fussy about watches, he took me shopping to find the perfect one.  I have always loved Michael Kors watches and often drooled over them in other people's blog posts.  I didn't intend on getting a rose gold watch BUT once I tried this one on, it was love! I'm never taking it off!

I also got this rather lovely bottle of Vintage Moét & Chandon champers which will be enjoyed at Christmas time with all of my family!

My wonderful friends from the US sent me this beautiful pearl and cubic zirconia bracelet which shall grace my wrist tomorrow night as I celebrate.

My one of a kind mother-in-law Maddie sent over this absolutely beautiful Modalu fuschia suede bag which is just SO me! The suede is so buttery and soft so I will have to be very careful where I place it.  I will definitely be investing in some protection spray for it! These bags are available from John Lewis and well worth a look. This one hasn't left my arm since I got it and I've had so many compliments in it already.

My official birthday bash is tomorrow night so I am looking forward to getting all dolled up, catching up with friends and sipping on some cocktails!

I had been on a healthy eating kick for the last 5-6 weeks to lose a few lbs that had crept on whilst I wasn't looking.  I am delighted to say that I reached my goal weight and lost 11lbs in 6 weeks.  I wanted to lose the extra weight before my birthday and Christmas so I would feel at my very best, especially since my dress for Saturday night is what could be termed as body-con!

12 Days Of Christmas Giveaway!

Since it's Christmas and a time for giving, I decided a while back that I would host a '12 Days Of Christmas' give-away.  It's just a small way for me to thank all of my readers for their support over the past 3 and a half years.

The idea behind the give-away is very simple.  I will be putting one fabulous prize up for grabs each day before Christmas...starting today! The give-away is open to EVERYONE so that includes international readers.

Forgotten Favourites

Occasionally I get so caught up with trying new products that I forget about the ones that have always been favourites for me.  I have permanent fixtures such as my foundation and concealer but I like to ensure that I alternate my other everyday products like blush, highlighter, eye shadow and lipsticks.  This makes the most of my make up collection but sometimes I get to experience the joy of rediscovering some gems.  It's akin to rediscovering a great song - everyone loves that feeling!

I had completely forgotten about this lipstick and I actually felt a bit guilty when I fished it out of my lipstick storage drawer (yes, there's a whole drawer!).  It was happily nestled in between all of my other YSL Rouge Volupte lipsticks, most of which are either nude/pink shades or bright reds.

I have always been a big fan of these lipsticks because they are undoubtedly the epitome of luxe.  From the weighty gold plated packaging to the silky, heavily pigmented formula, this is a lipstick that makes you feel special.  Sounds a little over the top? Well, you obviously haven't taken this baby for a spin!

This incredibly vivid, cool toned fuschia shade is no.11 Rose Culte.  As soon as I swiped it across my lips again, it became apparent that this is the perfect strong pink for winter because it's a blue toned pink which works so well in the harsh light that we have at this time of year.  I wanted to photograph the lipstick in pure daylight to let you see how lovely it is and show how well it works against a light to medium skin tone.  I don't tend to wear dark fake tan at this time of year, instead relying on gradual self tanners to add just a touch of warmth to my complexion.  If you like hot pink lipsticks then this YSL variant is a must, if only for the unbelievably smooth texture and comfortable wear. Well worth the price tag in my opinion.

Although I love my Estee Lauder Double Wear, I do like the have the choice of a lighter formula for those days when my skin looks a bit dull.  A lighter formulation with hydrating and radiance properties is the perfect solution for tired winter skin.  I have recently rediscovered the wonder of Dior Nude Foundation in no.030.  It's a medium coverage formulation with a slightly dewy finish and because it's water-based, it feels lightweight and comfortable on skin that's a bit parched and tired.  This is the perfect foundation for the morning after a big night out because it offers a combination of good coverage whilst letting your skin breath and making your complexion look fresh.

Most of us don't have cheekbones like Angelina Jolie so we use whatever tools are at our disposal to create them with make up! I used to use this product every single day and then got side-tracked by my Sleek Contour Kit.  I think the Sleek Kit is fantastic but it's more suited to daytime use for me.  Bare Minerals Faux Tan is THE contouring product for when I am doing my make up for a night out.  It's slightly darker in tone and when applied with a small contour brush (I like the Daniel Sandler one) it's amazing at creating sharp but natural-looking cheekbones.  Pop a lovely highlighter on the top of your cheekbones and voilá! You have sculpted cheekbones to die for! I also like to run the powder under my jawline to create a more defined appearance.  I love contouring because no matter what shape your face is, there's always something you can do to create a more defined appearance.

After watching Tanya Burr's most recent videos, where she used MAC Vanilla pigment, it reminded me how much I always loved it as a brow bone highlight and on the inner corners of my eye.  It's a soft ivory white that has an ethereal feel to it.  It's amazing at opening up the eye area and I feel like it's an amazing product for this time of the year when you want to create more of an impact with your party make up.  It can also be used as a highlighter for the cheekbones but use it sparingly! A little goes a long way!

What products have you rediscovered lately? I would love to hear about them!

Filigree Footwear & Snow Scenery

As soon as I set my peepers on these ballet pumps, I knew it was just a hop, skip and a jump into my online basket.  I never used to shop the Dorothy Perkins site but lately they have been on fire with regards to their footwear and knitwear.  I don't know what changes have occurred behind the scenes but I sure hope they continue!

The taupe/grey ballet pumps are made from really pretty metallic shimmer fabric but it was the filigree toe detailing that stole my heart! I love a statement toe! (did I really just utter those words?).

They are comfortable, practical and only £17.50 in the sale! I figured they were the perfect smart/casual footwear for the festive season when my feet have been utterly punished by towering heels.

The sizing is spot on so have no fear in ordering your usual size.  They remind me of something you would see in Dune or Kurt Geiger but for a fraction of the price.

As you will have seen on the news, Scotland has been blanketed in snow over the past couple of weeks.  Aberdeen was no exception and  have to admit that I really enjoyed it - what better than to decorate the house with Christmas sparkle whilst looking out of the window and seeing a winter wonderland?  Granted it's bloody cold but that just gives me an excuse to drink copious hot chocolates.  I'm all about the silver lining people!

Our house and garden resembled a Christmas card scene so I took advantage and snapped some photographs.

The snow just cleared today so I can finally take the car out without fear of sliding off the road.  I was hopin the weather would turn milder this week as I didn't fancy teetering around on Saturday night for my 30th birthday celebrations whilst wading through a few feet of snow.  Fingers crossed that doesn't happen!

A Cheaper Clarisonic Dupe?

As I mentioned in this post, my Clarisonic Mia is an integral part of my skin care regime and really does help to create a smooth, radiant canvas for my foundation.  Judging by the feedback I receive, a lot of you are still in two minds about buying a Clarisonic.  I can completely understand the reasoning behind this because £120 is a considerable amount of money to shell out on a product which you cannot be certain will be right for your skin.  If this has been your dilemma of late, then I may have just discovered the perfect solution in order for you to try out a quality cleansing brush at a much more affordable price!

I was recently sent the No7 Beautiful Skin Cleansing Brush for consideration and as soon as I saw the price tag of £25, I immediately knew that this could be the perfect experimental tool for everyone to sample the delights of a cleansing brush without having to shell out loads of money.   Also, No7 is very accessible for the majority of us given that there's a Boots store in every town/city.

In my opinion, a cleansing brush improves your skincare routine and gives a much needed boost to your skin in the winter months.  For me, it helps niggly banish dry patches, uneven skin tone and makes my skin glow.  I think we all feel like our skin becomes a bit dull in winter and the cleansing brush is the perfect tool to help your skin care products penetrate deeper and maximises their overall effect.

The No7 Beautiful Skin Cleansing Brush takes just 60 seconds and leaves your skin skin feeling REALLY clean.  I don't know anyone who wouldn't take an extra 60 seconds in the bathroom to dramatically improve their skin! As with a Clarisonic, the rotating brush gently exfoliates and deep cleanses the skin. It has 2 speed settings; you can use a slower speed for more sensitive skin or as a daily cleanse and the faster speed for a deep clean.

*Comparison with my Clarisonic Mia*

Some people simply remove their eye make up and apply cleanser to use the brush.  However, I prefer to wash my face with Dove soap, THEN apply cleanser and use the cleansing brush.  I prefer to do it this way because:

a) The brush seems to work more at exfoliating my skin than just removing a load of make up
b) The brush is easier to clean afterwards
c) I find I get far less blemishes when I'm not working make up into my skin

I use the cleansing brush every second night because, having sensitive skin, I find it reacts better to having a rest in between exfoliating sessions.  I just wet the rotating head and select the lower speed. (Speed 1 – Press the button once. Speed 2 – Press the button twice).

Now here's where the differences from the Clarisonic come in.

1) This cleansing brush is powered by batteries and therefore cannot be recharged like the Clarisonic. The only way you could make it slightly more economical is to buy AA rechargeable batteries.  You get two AA batteries in the pack with the No7 cleansing brush.

2) The No7 cleansing brush does not come with a plastic cap for the brush head.

*Comparison with my Clarisonic Mia*

I found the brush head bristles just as soft as the Clarisonic so don't worry about them being too abrasive.  Obviously cleansing brushes are not designed to be used on irritated skin or open wounds such as acne.

The brush head on the No7 cleansing brush is also removable and there will soon be replacement brush heads available in store priced at £8 for a two pack.

In conclusion, I think this is a fantastic cost effective way of trialling a good quality cleansing brush.  It's easy to get hold of, works really well at improving your skin and is easy to clean and take care of.

The No7 Beautiful Skin Cleansing Brush will be available from the 23 January 2012 from Boots stores nationwide and Boots.com.
